Reading 2-1 Newcastle United

Shane Long proved to be an inspired substitution for Royals manager Steve Coppell as the young Irishman netted the winner within twenty seconds of entering the field and just 7 minutes from time. Dave Kitson had earlier put the Royals ahead with a superb shot that had Shay Given grasping thin air.

Reading started with three strikers in Lita, Doyle and Kitson while Ibrahima Sonko also made his long awaited return from injury in front of the Madstad faithful. Newcastle had few chances to score and were given a lifeline when Emre's free kick into the near post was flicked on by Alan Smith and turned into his own net by a bemused Michael Duberry.
