City Nick it
I was so sure Reading would get something out of this game. And I wasn't alone in my thinking...
Just when Reading looked to be enjoying a well earned point from the City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester City weigh in with a last gasp goal to take all the points. Reading’s trips to Manchester in 2007 had been up until today most profitable. A FA Cup Fifth Round draw at Old Trafford in February was followed by a brilliant 2-0 victory over Manchester City. Reading’s third success of 2007 in Manchester was a hard fought scoreless draw at Old Trafford in their opening game of this season. Reading’s away record going to third placed City did not make for impressive reading. City’s 100% record at home meant that Reading’s task to change their away fortunes also appeared very daunting.
Manchester City took the lead when Martin Petrov scored in the 11th minute following a goal line scramble, which saw Elano strike a post, and Marcus Hahnemann pull off two close range saves. City’s early goal seemed to be an ominous sign of things to come. Reading were not down hearted though and showed a mettle and determination to get something out of the match. City was neat and incisive with their passing and movements but were unable to craft out any chances, as they seemed to lack the decisive killer touch.
Reading cashed in on City’s inability to get any further first half goals in the 43rd minute. James Harper rifled in a Bobby Convey pass to give Reading a goal just before half time. It might have appeared harsh on City, as Reading’s only other chance of the first half was a miscued volley from Convey. City had dominated the first period, but the Reading equaliser seemed to be the signal for the game to change its complexion after the break.
Reading re-entered the pitch with a renewed sense of purpose following the half time interval. Now Reading passed the ball and began to create movement, but like City no concrete chances seemed to be forthcoming. A draw seemed to be the fairest and most likely outcome. Neither side was getting close enough to score with only tentative efforts being made. City probably should have won the game with Geovanni blasting a shot over and Georgios Samaras also shooting over from range.
A point would have been gratefully accepted by all at Reading, especially in view of City’s home form and Reading’s away difficulties. However, Stephen Ireland popped up in the final minute of the game to volley home a Geovanni header. Reading hearts were broken, but were still full of spirit and hope for the challenges that still lie ahead.

Personally, I blame Sonko for this defeat. If he hadn't got himself injured in stoppage time then the game would've been over before Ireland scored...
