More strange goings on at White Hart Lane
Asking Reading to return to White Hart Lane just a week after the inexplicable 6-4 game was a bit like asking a crime victim to go back to the scene of the crime. The torrid game last week was never going to be repeated in terms of score-line or performance. However, all those going to the match would have been fully expecting goals and incident. They got precisely that with four goals including a very bizarre opener and a sending off as well.
Tottenham nearly opened the scoring with a carbon copy of their first goal last week. Berbatov found Keane in the Reading box, but the Irishman, who was all-alone and had an open goal, but fired his shot wide. It was easier to score than miss, but in terms of being a blunder it was seriously overshadowed in the 25th minute.
Stephen Hunt delivered a free kick into the penalty box and Paul Robinson caught the ball. However, in doing so he was ruled by the linesman to have carried the ball over the line. The replays on Match of the Day do not conclusively rule that it was a goal, but for the second in two weeks a contentious goal was given in favour of Reading.
If that particular decision appeared to something of a recurring dream, sadly the recurring nightmare of not being able to keep a clean sheet was not far away. Tottenham equalised when Dimitar Berbatov smashed home a shot inside the Reading box. Shortly after the break déjà vu was in full swing as the Bulgarian grabbed his sixth goal against Reading in seven days from the penalty spot. Robbie Keane was brought down and Berbatov converted the subsequent penalty.
That is now four penalties in five games against Reading. All that was left now was the obligatory red card. It did arrive but not until after Reading had equalised. Berbatov had missed another open goal to put Spurs 3-1 up and as a result Reading could sense they were still very much in the game. Sure enough Stephen Hunt, who once again had endured unnecessary abuse from the home supporters, pounced on a Robinson parry after Leroy Lita’s shot wasn’t held by the hapless goalkeeper to equalise.
With Reading and Tottenham facing each other so soon after the league meeting, there was always going to be a slight undercurrent of temper between the two sides. It all became too much late in the game for Tom Huddlestone and Bobby Convey. A clash off the ball between the two players led to Huddlestone appearing to head butt Convey and referee Mark Clattenburg had no option but to send off the Tottenham player. Convey received a yellow card as well. Round three will now take place between the two sides as they meet for the third time in two and half weeks in a replay at the Madejski Stadium.

Wow morons like to post here, so he;s an animal who has never been sent off and the one thing he gets hated for was an accident that only idiots think he did on purpose.
florida pete you really are an idiot that knows nothing. Karma will catchup with him - I think it already has 7 goals in 7 games!!!
I don't think we will ever be able to compete with the likes of Reading and shpuld give them a bye into the next round of the competition. Lat year it was Arsenal reserves that we couldn't beat, this year it is Reading reserves. I think even Reading fans would acknowledge that this represents another drop in playing capability by Spurs. I think Steve Coppel is a genius and wish we had him at the Lane.
I think that Hunty has played his last cup game for Reading. Coppell put out a team that was designed to play its heart out but lose comfortably without being destroyed, so that Premiership survival could be the focus for the remainder of the season. Hunt ruined all of that by playing out of his skin again and orchestrating a draw. I doubt that Coppell will forgive him easily.
We should have won easily mate! You've got championship quality ground, players, manager and style of football! Come next year we'll tank you - with or without Berbatov! Enjoy your 5 minutes in the sun!
Hope the wedding went well!
Oh grow up you lot. He certainly does not deserve the abuse you lot are dishing out or have you nothing better to do today? What happened at the Chelsea game has been discussed to death and no one except some Chelsea "fans" (and I do say some) think otherwise. Lay off him and if you actually watched him play you would realise he plays with passion and pride and he is certainly not a f*cking animal and as for the t*at who said he wanted his legs broken well you are a pathetic excuse for a human being - both of you go get a life.
florida pete your anti Stephen Hunt rant is based on what exactly? His work rate is second to none and he's Reading's most improved player of the season. You confuse tireless commitment for abuse. The man is not a malicious player, he just gives his all. The banter aimed against him spews from the few biased reports of the Cech incident and also because he's an effective player on the pitch. You love him really!
Totally agree with Captain Jack & Jonno.
Hunt played a blinder yesterday and deserved his goals.
Yes, he's an irritating little git, but he is skilful, quick and gives the proverbial 110%.
With the honourable exception of our centre-backs & Steed, if Spurs had had a few more with Hunt's passion then we would be home & dry in the 4th Round.
If I were Ramos I'd put in a cheeky bid for Hunt in the window. He might just breathe some life back into our bunch of talented but lily-livered "superstars".
Hmmm, Roy Keane had no talent did he?
I think you may have lost some cred with that statement.
Presumably Vieira was also a talentless bastard.
As a long-suffering Spurs fan I would kill for a tough, aggressive leader in the midfield.
Instead we have to make do with two midgets, Jermaine the under-achiever, Zokora the headless chicken and Taraabt who was a little underwhelming yesterday when forced to do more than just playground party tricks.
I have got some hopes for KPB, but he is very raw and not sure he is a leader of men.
Shame Ledley hasn't got a twin brother (OK, slightly less injury-prone). He is one awesome talent who could easily play defensive midfield & show JJ, Hudd, Tainio et al a thing or two.
Truly a superby talented professional.
If it was not for Hunt you would have booked your place for the 4th round no problem!!
Luton fan - so Hunt is a thug and a bully and "most" football fans know that - yeah right - come back when you have grown up. Oh sorry was I being a bully... I apologise NOT!!
My word, we're all getting a touch hormonal here, aren't we?
Hunty may be, in the opinion of one of today's correspondents ' a dirty pikey little rat' who 'deserves to have his legs broken', but he gives 110% - even if the game is pointless - and can score goals.
I think that people's opinions of him were formed after the Chelsea game last season. It seems now that all he has to do is breathe in the general direction of an opposing player and he will be booked, abused etc.
I'll be honest, I'd never seen him play before he came to Reading, so I can't comment on the 'dangerous' and 'vicious' tags that have been attached to him here. But one has to ask why Coppell signed him if he is so 'dangerous' and 'vicious'? That's not Coppell's style of play, never has been, never will be.
I wonder how many Reading fans have visited Spurs websites this weekend throwing abuse at Tom Huddlestone for the attempted head butt on Bobby Convey? He should at least have picked on someone his own size! You had plenty of chances to finish us off yesterday and didn't. Stop trading on the glory days of the eighties and get real - you're Chelsea's feeder club!!
i hear hunt being bandied about in the same light as Roy Keane, their would'nt be a link that he is Irish, so all Irish players are Gypsy animals and or bullies, c'mon for f*ck sake are we football supporters or biggots?!
I'm a Spurs fan and I rate Hunt. I do think he is a dangerous tackler but no more so than the likes of Paul Scholes. I think the unfortunate Cech incident has highlighted everything he has done since. It was a case of the keeper coming out bravely, taking everything and getting injured. I thought Hunt tried to pull out.
I'm not saying he's not a dirty player, just not dirty enough for the rep. And he's a quality player in a team like Reading.
Whomever said that Hunt should have been sent off twice already this season is spot on, twice Ive seen him come with 2 footed lunges, and not the shitty little ones the refs have got horny over lately..The worse one about a month ago, I cant remember which team they were playing, his left foot hit around the guy's shin, his right around the knee, ref missed it...I wasnt sure if he meant the Chec thing at the time, now Im sure he did...Yeah, he can play football, like a fuckin animal..
Could someone explain to me how it is possible to 'give 110%'?
